What We Publish
And How We Publish It
.
As It Ought to Be invites submissions from both seasoned writers and emerging voices in the following genres:
- Poetry
- Art and literary criticism
- Book reviews
- Interviews with writers
Starting in January of 2025, AIOTB has transitioned to a monthly magazine. On the first week of the month, we will publish all accepted poems as a literary broadside. Each poem will be formatted as a link to page featuring its own artwork and the author’s biography.
Literary criticism, book reviews, and author interviews will be published on a rolling basis throughout the month and will appear on our front page blog and in the archived pages accessible at the top of our page.
How to Submit
You can submit your work to our Google Forms account. We will be unable to take submissions via email. We strive to get in touch about your submission in 4-8 weeks. If this time has passed without a decision feel free to reach out for an update. Please wait at least 4 months to resubmit after a decision has been made so that we can accommodate all of our submissions.
Poetry
Submit 3-5 previously unpublished poems in a Word doc. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please notify us to withdraw a piece from consideration if it is accepted elsewhere. In order to feature as many voices as possible, we will only be able to accept a single piece per author.
Before submitting, check out our poetry archives for a taste of what we feature. Although we love innovative forms, we may not be able to accommodate pieces with complicated formatting due to the limits of the WordPress platform.
Literary Reviews and Interviews
As good stewards of the literary community, we want to celebrate and publicize the great work written by our authors by using our platform for reviews and interviews. Reviews should be a minimum of 500 words, focusing on educating the reader on how to appreciate the author’s work. While we feature all kinds of reviews and interviews, we are most interested in those that shine a spotlight on independent writers whose work deserve wider renown.
