Rose Mary Boehm: “A Poem Escapes”

A Poem Escapes

It unfolded in those twilight moments
between the stumble to the bathroom
and the sinking back into the dream
that I can no longer enter—one dream-door closes,
another opens, bringing a half-eaten poem, no less.
Was it about the day I almost deconstructed?
Did my half-asleep mind want to revisit the pain?
Must it be about anything at all?
But it’s lurking there, meaning and metaphors,
cloaked in its invisibility cape.
Teasing.
I want to write some of it down, pen and paper
are somewhere in the dark.
No, can’t wake my loved one.
His sleep is light.
The poem disappears over the event horizon
and is being sucked
into the black hole of the early morning hours.
And what I remember when I wake
is a collection of incoherent schmalz,
shreds of a poem that make me blush
with embarrassment
as I brush my teeth.
