Lorraine Caputo: “AND THAT WIND TWIRLS”

AND THAT WIND TWIRLS

At three or so
a phantom factory whistle
flows across this valley
& that wind twirls
through the night
rattlin’ windows
Five – the matins bell
rings from some convent
over yonder
& down these
narrow streets
women’s voices chant
in unison
their trotting footsteps
echoing
A rooster crows
from the patio
of some neighbor
& that wind twirls
through the
aging night
Twilight washes across the east
pallid colors swell
as our sun nears that horizon
