Laurie Kuntz: “Sooner or Later”

Sooner or Later

When you left for a minor errand
you said see you soon,
then, flippantly, you repeated: sooner or later,
and we are living our soons without
thought of what is coming
we take for granted what is handed
to us, this time, like ripe peaches
the color of setting suns,
soon is dinner, soon is a walk,
soon, a new full moon, a rising beach tide,
soon is your voice from another room
asking me if this shirt, the color of dusk
reflects the blue of your eyes,
which sooner than later
will close on both of our lives.
