Karina Castrillo: “I never wanted you to be like us”

I never wanted you to be like us

Nicaragua
I see your drive-thru coffees now
Fast food for a fast world
I never wanted you to be like us

Swallowing the world like an epidemic
We’re sad and lonely
And I never wanted you like that

I wanted your lakes and your mountains free
Like when we grew up together

I would’ve been a robot if it wasn’t for you
Wouldn’t have known anything other than a suit
But I know the drums of La Gigantona
El vigorón y el pinol…illo

The tourists see your volcanoes
Some will bring their cranes
One day they’ll charge you for parking
In your own soil
And it’ll break me
Because I’m made of you
