Jon Bennett: “Petty Dreams”

Petty Dreams

My dad gave me his sleep apnea machine
he got an upgrade
it’s a medical hand me down
I imagine when he dies
he’ll leave me a kidney
The machine helps me sleep
and I remember my dreams now
but my dreams are petty
usually about achieving fame
people wave to me from cars
I wave to them
they stop me in the street
I wear a sash, have the keys to the city
am loved and lauded
I know I should dream
better
but I’ve got no control
Every night
the machine
takes over.
