Cindy Rinne: “Ghost Turkey”

Ghost Turkey

Under lace stars and
embroidered birds,
a turkey ghost is proud
he sacrificed
himself for a good cause –
a mountain lion’s hunger.
His caretaker was dreaming

of a shaded garden
where people could rest
when the visitor
arrived in the yard,
the mountain lion’s
turf, full of desire
for the turkey’s body and

crocheted song. The next
morning, ghost turkey
tried to follow his routine
of a Turkish breakfast:
cucumbers, tomatoes, and
watercress washed
down with a cup of strong

hot tea in a tulip-shaped
glass. In the silence
of the left-over moon,
the caretaker called
his cross-stitched name
over and over
and over and over.
