“A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.”
–Thomas Paine, “The Rights of Man”, part II, chapter V (1792)

As It Ought to Be was originally founded in 2009 by Matt Gonzalez, Jim Dorenkott, and Okla Elliott as a progressive forum to encourage humane thought and action related to contemporary political and cultural matters. Their vision was to bring together writers who all value progressive democratic principles, respect different viewpoints, and seek common ground while maintaining a healthy skepticism for unnecessary compromise.
Upon co-founder Okla Elliott’s untimely passing in 2017, Chase Dimock took over as the Editor in Chief of AIOTB Magazine and continues this mission today to maintain AIOTB as a publisher of poetry, reviews, and author interviews aimed at providing a platform for diverse perspectives, innovative artistic visions, and challenging ideas.
Above all else AIOTB strives to be good citizen of the literary world and, as the great late Mike James said “a force for good.”
